Waste Water Heat Recovery for Showers
Southside Housing Association – Innovative New Shower System Installed Across Glasgow Residential Development
The UKs leading shower manufacturer, Mira Showers recently supplied Glasgow-based housing association Southside Housing Association with its new and innovative Advance Heatloop™ as part of a decarbonisation programme.
The energy-efficient electric showers are the first in the UK to be compatible with Recoup waste water heat recovery systems, an important tool in the built environment’s quest to reduce carbon emissions ahead of the government’s 2050 net zero target.
Aimed at enhancing the showering experience while improving energy efficiency and reducing energy wastage, the 14 Advance Heatloop™ showers were supplied alongside Recoup Easyfit+ WWHRS units.
Installed alongside the Recoup Easyfit+, the Advance Heatloop™
electric shower will intelligently regulate power based on the incoming water conditions, reducing power consumption by using the preheated water from the WWHR unit.
Requiring less power to run when used with the WWHRS unit, the Advance Heatloop™ systems will reduce energy bills for the occupants while providing trusted and reliable water delivery. Ensuring consistent performance all year round, including compensating for any fluctuations in flow during the cold winter months, these innovative electric showers feature proven thermostatic controls and maximum temperature settings for ultimate safety.
Furthermore, the Advance Heatloop™ utilises Mira’s Clearscale technology to reduce the limescale by up to 50%. As a result, performance will be improved to ensure a longer lasting shower and greater energy efficiency.
The one, two, and three-bedroom flat renovation project, led by Southside Housing Association and main contractor Lochlie Construction Ltd, was located on McCulloch Street, in the popular region of Pollokshields in Glasgow. Following a major fire, the developers focussed on full reinstatement works in line with their sustainability and build quality programme.
Southside Housing Association wanted to ensure not only better insulated flats, but also more comfortable accommodation and reduced energy bills for tenants, with the aim of achieving an EPC ‘B’ rating.
As a result, the renovation work included not only the comprehensive refurbishment of kitchens, bedrooms, social areas, and bathrooms, but also a new roof structure installation. The redevelopment project is anticipated to be completed in August 2024.
Having worked closely with the client before, Mira Showers was also enlisted to support the nearby Strathbungo project, which involved the replacement of 27 shower units.
Neil Brown, Contract Manager for Southside Housing Associations Development and Regeneration Team, noted that these new and highly efficient systems would be a great asset to the properties as we continually strive to improve our stock with significant money-saving measures for our residents.
Calum McConnell, Senior Specification Manager at Mira Showers, expressed his pride at how the project was progressing. He said:
“The redevelopment project on McCulloch Street is progressing well, with an anticipated completion date of early August. The installation of the new Heatloop™ systems should truly enhance the showering experience of the tenants while reducing their energy bills. Taking a proactive approach to the design and supply of the Advance Heatloop™ underscores Mira Showers’ commitment to efficiency and innovation in housing development.”
